ButpeopleintheVirginIslandsthoughtitcouldharmtheirhealthandthehealthoftheislands,too.TheproteststartedontheislandofSt.John,whichiscircledbycoralreefsandincludesabignationalpark.PeopleonSt.ThomasandSt.Croixjoinedin,too.
Sendingtheplantwastetothemainlandisnotagoodidea,either.Itincludesinsectsthatcouldcreateproblemsinotherareas.InPuertoRico,anislandintheCaribbeanSea,theArmyCorpsiscuttingplantwasteintomulch(护根),whichhelpsimprovethesoil.PeopleintheVirginIslandsliketheidea.Buttheremaynotbeenoughspaceforallofit.

Scientistshavelongsuspectedthatanimalssensenaturaldisastersbeforehumansdo.Peoplehavetoldstoriesofdogsrefusingtogooutsideandsharksswimmingtodeeperwatersbeforeahurricane.Afterthe2004tsunami,peoplesaidtheysawtigers,monkeys,andwaterbuffaloescapingtohighergroundbeforethewatersrushedin.Eveninthehardest-hitareasofsouthernAsia,therewerefewanimaldeaths.
It’sunlikelythatananimal’sso-calledsixthsensecomesfromsomemagicalpowertoseeintothefuture.Expertsbelievethatanimalsmaybemoresensitivethanhumanstochangesintemperatureandotherenvironmentalconditionsthattakeplacebeforeanaturaldisaster.TheelephantsinSriLanka,forexample,mayhavepickedupvibrations(震动)fromwithintheEarth,asignthatdangerwascoming.Becausevibrationsinthegroundtravelmuchfasterthananoceanwave,theelephantsmayhavefelttheearthquakethatcausedthetsunamiwellbeforethetsunamiitselfcametothecoast.
