Introduction
Marriageisanimportantpartofeveryone’slifeandmarriagevalueisanenduringtopicallthetime.Marriageisoneofthemostholythingsintheworld.Itreferstolove,equality,andmoneyandsoon.Tomarryistobeconfrontedbythelaughterandtearsoflifetogetherandtogrowoldtogether.PrideandPrejudiceandJaneEyrearetwofamousnovelswhichexpressmarriagevaluefromwomen’sperspective.Attheirtimes,womenhadnostatusandmarriagedecidedfemale’slife.Thespecificsocialbackgroundresultedthatwomenhadtomarryrichmenforfinancialassurance.Elizabethbelievedthatloveandmarriagewascloselyassociatedwithmoneyforshecouldnotmakealivingherself.JaneEyrepursuedpurelovewhichhadnoimpurity,forhermoneywasnotthekeysheconcernedformarriage.Thoughtwoheroines’attitudestowardmarriageandmoneyweredifferent,theirconceptswerereasonablebecauseofthespecificsocialbackground.
Whilenowadays,thephenomenonoftoomanyconsiderationsofmoneyformarriageisbecominginuredtobeunusual.Peoplearegettingmoreandmorerealisticaboutmoneyandstatusinmarriage,evenmorethanpeopledidinElizabeth’sagesometimes.Inbetweenpoorandrichchoiceoftherich,andinlovewithdoesnotlovedoesnotlovetochoosebetween.FewpeoplewillbelikethisfortheloveofJaneEyretoabandonallforthecharacter,andwithoutlookingback.Moreandmorepeoplegetmarriedonlyformoney.Itisnotanormalphenomenoninmodernsociety.AtElizabeth’stimewomenhadnopowerandhadnocontrolovertheirownfortune.Whiletodaywomenhadthesamestatusasmen,thereforepeopleshouldnotoverlyemphasizemoneyandstatusformarriage.Thispaperarguesthatmarriageshouldbebasedontruelove,equality,whilethehappinessofmarriageshouldnotbemeasuredbytheamountofmoney.
Inordertoshowpeopletherationalattitudestowardmarriage,thethesiswillanalyzethedifferentmarriagevaluesofthetwoheroinesthroughcomparisonsoftheauthors,thesocialbackgrounds,thefamilybackgroundsaswellasthepersonalitiesoftheheroines.
1.ComparisonsoftheTwoNovels
PrideandPrejudiceandJaneEyrearethetwofamousnovelsinBritishliteraryhistory.Theywereallpublishedroughlyinthelate18thcenturytotheearlythe19thcenturyandtheircluesareallfemale’sloveexperiences.Theyallreflectfemale’struelifeatthattime.Despitethesimilarities,therearesomedifferencesbetweenthetwonovels.Thelivingenvironmentsofthetwoauthorsandsocialbackgroundsofthetwostoriesaredifferent.Thedifferencesleadtodifferentconceptsoftheauthorstowardmarriage.

JaneAusten(1775-1817),theauthorofPrideandPrejudice,isafamousBritishrealisticnovelist.“JaneAustenwasanearlyfavoriteofmalecritics,recommended,likeapriggisheldersister,tounrulysiblingsandapprentices.”(Elaine2004:
102)Herworksmainlyfocusonwomen’smarriageandlifeinmiddle-classfamilies.Shedepictsminorlandedgentry,countryclergymenandtheirfamilies,inwhichmarriagemainlydetermineswomen'ssocialstatus.Sheusesfemale'suniqueandmeticulousobservationaswellaslivelyandinterestingwordsdescribingwhatshesawaroundher.Sheisoneofthemostinfluentialnovelistsoftheearly19thcenturyandalsoamongthefirstEnglishwomenwhobrokethemalemonopolyofnovelwriting.JaneAustenistheseconddaughterinamiddle-classfamilyandherfatherisarector.JaneAustenwasmostlyeducatedathomeandirregularlyatschool,butshereceivedabroadereducationthanmanywomenofhertime.Shestartedtowriteforfamilyamusementasachild.“JaneAusten’smostpopularnovelhasconsistentlybeenPrideandPrejudice.Whenshebegantowritethenovel,MissAustenwasthentwenty-oneyearsold.”(SuoJinmei2009:

CharlotteBronte(1816-1855),whosefamousworkisthenovelJaneEyre,isafamousBritishfemalenovelist.In1847JaneEyremadeCharlottebecomingfamousandwasatypicalmasterpieceforher.JaneEyrewasnotforherfirstbookbutforherfirstpublishedmasterpiece.Herworksaremainlycenteredonwomen’sstrongdesiretogainindependence.“Womenhadtobuildtheirownheroesfromimagination,sincesomanyareasofmasculineexperiencewereimpenetrable.”(Showalter2004:
