1Mostofusknowaboutthephasesoflifewhichwelabeltoparalleldifferent
agegroupsandlifestages:
childhood,adolescence,adulthood,andold
age.Wethinkofinfancybeforechildhoodandmiddleagebeforeoldage,with
eachuniquephasebringingitsownpeculiarsetofchallenges.These
challengescanbeovercomebyacquaintingourselveswiththem,suchasthe
child'sneedtolearn,theadult'sneedtofindtherightcareerandbuildafamily,
andthesenior'sneedforsupportandgoodhealthcare.
2Interestingly,ideasaboutthestagesoflifearechanging.
3Inprevioustimes,peopledidn'thaveasolidideaofchildhoodasbeing
separatefromadulthood.Ahundredyearsago,noonethoughtof
adolescence.Untilrecentlyitwasunderstoodasanormthattheirinductionto
adulthoodwascompletedassoonastheygraduatedfromcollege.Theywould
nowfindasensiblejobwhichwouldleadtoacareer.Thenduringthiscareer
theywouldstartafamily,idealybeforetheyturned30.
4Todaywehaveanequivalentneedtorecognizeanewphaseoflifethat
comesafterhighschoolgraduation,continuesthroughcollege,andthenleads
tostartingafamilyandhavingacareer,theso-caledodysseyyears.Recent
trendsshowradicalchangesasyoungpeoplearefolowinga
differentagenda.Theytakebreaksfromschool,livewithfriendsandoften
returntolivingwiththeirparents.Similarly,theyfallinandoutoflove,quitone
jobandtryanotherorevenshifttoanewcareer.So,weneedtorecognizethis
newstage,theodysseyyears,whichmanynowconsidertobeanunavoidable
stageinreachingadulthood.
5Peoplewhowerebornpriortothe60sor70sinthelastcenturytended
toframetheirconceptofadulthoodbaseduponachievingcertain
accomplishments:
movingawayfromhome,becomingfinancialyindependent,
findingtherightspouseandstartingafamily.Butthatemphasisonstabilitydid
notremainstatic.Today,youngpeopleareunlikelytodothesame.Duringthe
odysseyyears,ahighproportionofyoungpeoplearedelayingmarriage,child
bearing,andevenemployment.
6Theodysseyyearscansaddleyoungpeoplewithenormouspressureto
moveforwardquickly.Asthesoleheirandfocusoftheirparents'expectations,
hopesanddreams,somereactwithrebelliousandpridefulattitudesand

behaviortowardtheirparents.Theyoftenresentthepressurethey'refeeling
andkeepadistancefromtheirparentsorevenrunawayfromhome.Their
confusioncomesfromthedifficultiestomakeparentsunderstandthemand
thefluidjourneyofdiscoverytheyneedinthisphaseoftheirlives.Togetaway
fromthisconfusionandupset,manyyoungpeopleresorttocomputergames,
iPods,iPhones,oriPads,tohelpdistractthemfromtheirpainandstress.
7Likewise,theirparentsarefeelingmoreanxious.Theymay
makeallowancesforatransitionphasefromstudentlifetoadultlife,butthey
getupsetwhentheyseethetransitionoftheirgrownchildren'slivesmoving
awayfromtheirexpectationsandstretchingfiveyearstosevenyears,and
beyond.Theparentsdon'tevendetectaclearsenseofdirectionintheir
children'slives.Theylookatthemandseethethingsthatarebeingdelayed.
8It'shardtopredictwhat'snext.Newguidelineshaven'tbeenestablishedyet,
andeverythingseemstogivewaytoalesspermanentversionof
itself.There'sbeenashiftinthestatusandbalanceofpowerbetweenthe
genders,too.Morewomenaregettingdegreesthanmen.Malewageshave
remainedstableoverthepastdecades,whilefemalewageshaveboomed.
9Apartfromanythingelse,thishashadanimpliciteffecton
courtship.Educatedwomencangetmanyofthethingstheywant,suchas
security,accomplishment,andidentitywithoutmarriage.However,both
gendersarehavingahardertimefindingsuitablematestobuildtheirlives
with.Consideringallofthis,it'sbeneficialtoknowthateventhoughgraduates
aredelayingmanythingsaftercollege,surveysshowtheystillholdhighly
traditionalaspirations.Forexample,thiscontemporarygenerationrates
parenthoodevenmorehighlythanpreviousgenerationsdid!
10Thisnewphasewilllikelygrowmorepronouncedinthecoming
years.Nationsaroundtheworldhavewitnessedsimilartrendstowarddelaying
marriageandspendingmoreyearsthanevershiftingbetweenhigher
educationandsettlingdownwithacareerandfamily.
11Nevertheless,graduatesshouldn'tbedeceivedintothinkingtheycanback
offsimplybecausethingshavebecomemoredifficult.Alargenumberof
peoplechasingrelativelyfeweropportunitiescancreatestrongcompetitive
pressure.So,fromtheoutset,keepyourresumeprofessionalandup-to-date.
