Poortreatmentandcrampedconditionsmeantmanyoftheanimalsdidnotsurviveforlong.ButtheMenageriecontinuedtogrow.EdwardIcreatedapermanentnewhomefortheMenagerieatthewesternentrancetotheTowerinwhatbecameknownastheLionTower.Theterrifyingsoundsandsmellsofwildanimalsmusthavebothimpressedandscaredvisitors.
By1622,thecollectionhadbeenextendedtoincludethreeeagles,twopumas,atigerandajackal,aswellaslionsandleopards,whowerethemainattractions.
However,theendoftheMenageriecameinthe1830s.Campaignershadbeguntoraiseconcerns,andtheanimalswereexpensive,occasionallydangerousandanuisancetotheguardsmen.TheDukeofWellingtonsent150ofthebeaststoanewzooinRegent'sPark,today'sLondonZoo.
