In1951,thethendirectoroftheGuinnessBrewery,SirHughBeaver,wantedtosettleanargumentaboutthefastestbirdinEurope.Aftertalkingtohisfriends,heconcludedthatabookwhichansweredsuchquestionsmightbepopular.TheGuinnesscompanyhiredtwoEnglishmentowritewhatlaterbecametheGuinnessBookofWorldRecords.Thefirsteditionswaspublishedin1955andhasbeenabestsellereversince.
Morethan60,000newrecordsaresentintothebookeachyear,buttheycannotallbeprinted.Instead,theeditorsofthebooksetdowntherecordsandkeeptrackoftheminotherways.Therecordsareputintodifferentcategories.TheGuinnessBookofWorldRecordshaschaptersonthehumanbody,amazingfeats,thenaturalworld,scienceandtechnology,artsandthemedia,modernsociety,travelandtransport,andsportsandgames.Youcanlearnthattheoldestpersonisawomanwholivedtobe122yearsand164days,thatthelongestmoustachereachedalengthof1.6metresandthatthelongestpoisonoussnakeis5.71metreslong.Therearealsostrangerecords,liketheEnglishmanwhobalancedasmallcarwighing159.6kilogrammesonhisheadforthirty-threeseconds!
TherearemanyChineserecords.Forexample,Tian’anmenSquareisthelargestsquareintheworldwithanareaofabout40hectares.ChinahasthegreatestnumberofhospitalsintheworldandUrumqiisthemostremotecityfromthesea—itis2,500kilometresfromthenearestcoast.Aspecialanddeliciousrecordwassetin1997tocelebrateHongKong’sreturntoChina.Theworld’slargestjiaoziwasmade,weighinganincredible480kilogrammes!
ManyoftherecordsintheGuinnessBookofWorldRecordscomefromtheworldofsports.Amongthebrilliantathleticachievements,afewrecordsstandoutbecauseofthemovinglifestoriesbehindthem.TheGuinnessworldrecordforthefastestaveragespeedattheTourdeFrancewassetin1999bytheAmericancyclistLanceArmstong.Impressiveastherecordis,itfadesnexttothestoryofArmstrong’sstruggleagainstdisease.In1996Armstrong,thethenNO.1cyclistintheworld,wasdiagnosedwithcancerandmanythoughtthatitmeanttheendofhiscareer,maybeevenhislife.In1998,however,Armstrongreturnedtotheworldofracing.HewentontosetthespeedrecordandachievehisgoalofwinningtheTourdeFrancesixyearsinarowfrom1999to2004.

Skateboardshavebeenaroundsincethe1970s,buttheyhaverecentlybecomepopularagain.ManyteenagershavediscoveredtheskateboardasaresultofTVshows,films,andcompetitionssuchastheXGames.TheXGamesareliketheOlympicGamesforsportsthatarelessfamiliartousthansportslikefootballandbasketball.Anewgenerationofsportsiscapturingtheheartsandmindsofpeoplewhoarewillingtotrysomethingnew.Thesenewsportsarecalled“extremesports”andallcentreonthe“X-factor”—thepurejoyofdoingsomethingthatyoudidnotthinkyoucoulddoandovercomingyourfears.
Extremesportsaredifferentfromregularsports.Insteadofsimplytryingtodefeattheotherteamorsetanewrecord,manyextremesportsareaboutbeauty,harmonyandthrills.Infact,someextremesportsarenotreally“sports”atall,becausetheydonothaveclearrulesaboutwinningorlosing.Thegoalofa“competition”maysimplybetohavefunandenjoytheexcitementoftryingsomethingnew.

Overthenextfewhundredyears,theSwahilikingdomsandtheislandsofftheAfricancoastdevelopedintotheworld’stradingcentreforivory,spices,rhinoceroshorns,shells,animalskinsandsugar.TheyweretradedtomerchantsfromtheArabiccountries,Egypt,Greece,Rome,India,CeylonandChina.
TheArabiccontactstotheAfricancoastledtothenextmeetingbetweenblackpeopleandaChinese.Intheyear751,theChinesetravelerDuhuanwastakenprisonerbytheArabicarmy.Heescaped,andafteralongjourneywanderingthroughArabiccountries,hereturnedtothemotherlandbyboatin762.TherehewrotehisRecordofMyTravels,whichgivesinformationonCentralAsian,ArabicandAfricancountries.
Inheeleventhcentury,theAfricansmadeseveralvoyagestothecourtoftheSongDynasty.ItwasamajordevelopmentthattheAfricanswerereachingouttoChina.TheearliestAsianculturalrelicfoundinAfricaalsodatesfromthisperiod.AsmallbronzestatueofalionwasfoundintheSwahilitownofShanga.NothingsimilarhaseverbeenfoundinEastAfrica.
ThecontactsbetweenChinaandAfricaoverthecenturiesledtotheawarenessofeachother’sexistence,butstillnoaccuratemapsofthecountriesaroundtheIndianOceanexisted.Bythebeginningofthefifteenthcenturythetimewasripeforagrandmeeting.InEastAfricathecoastaltownswerereachingtheheightoftheirpower.Intheeast,Chinaprosperedunderanewdynasty.TheMinggovernmenthadalargenavyandthewilltouseit.
Intheyearsbetween1405and1433,sevenlargetreasurefleetssailedwestwardsonvoyagesoftradeandexploration.UnderthecommandofZhengHe,thefleetssetsailfromtheSouthChinaSeaacrosstheInidanOceantothemouthoftheRedSea,andthentravelledfurthersouth,discoveringtheeasterncoastofAfirca.
