NotallchildrenhoweverwillseeorspeakwiththeirdadonFather'sDay.Studiessayabout24%ofAmericanchildrenliveinafamilywithoutafather.Thisisthreetimesmorethanin1960.Backthenonly8%ofchildrenlivedinafamilywithoutafather.
Onereasonistheincreasingchildrenborntowomenwhoarenotmarried.Studiesshowthechildrengrowingupwithoutafatheraremorelikelytobepoor.Theyaremorelikelytoleaveschoolbeforecompletingtheireducation,andtheyaremorelikelytobecomeinvolvedincrimeorillegaldrugs.
AnotherreasonforthelargenumberofAmericanfamilieswithoutfathersistheincreasingofthenumberofpeoplewhohaveendedtheirmarriage.ThedivorcerateintheUShasincreasedsharplyinrecentyears.Todaymorethan50%ofallmarriagesendindivorce.In1960theratewasonly6%.Afteradivorce,ajudgedecideswhichparentwillcareforthechildren.Inabout70%ofcases,thejudgedecidesthatthechildrenwilllivewiththeirmother.Inabout8%ofthecases,childrenlivewiththeirfatherafteradivorceandinabout15%ofthecaseschildrenlivewitheachparentatdifferenttimes.
TheimageoffathersinAmericahaschangedespeciallysincethe1960s.Beforethen,manypeoplefeltthatfatherswerenotsupposedtobecomeinvolvedwiththeirchildrenortoshowloveforthem.Thiswasnotapartofafather'simageasastrongandemotionalman.Fathersweretheleadersofthefamily.Theyearnedthemoney.Theymadetherules.Theypunishedthechildrenwhentheywerebad.Backthenfathersdidnotalwaysspendalotoftimewiththeirchildren.Mostmothersstayedathometocareforthem.Theyalsodidalltheshopping,cleaningandcooking.
Duringthe1960sand1970s,however,moreAmericanwomenbegantoworkoutsidethehome.Asaresult,moreandmorefathersbecameinterestedintakingcareoftheirchildrenandhelpingtheirwife.Yet,moststudiestodayshowthatwomenstillspendmoretimecaringfortheirchildrenanddoinghousework.Thisistrueevenifthewifeworksandearnsthesameamountofmoneyasherhusband.
Severalstudiesshowthatfatherswhoareinvolvedwiththeirchildrenareusuallymorehappyandinbetterhealththanfatherswhoarenotinvolved.SocelebratingfatherhoodisimportantformennotonlyonFather'sDaybutthroughouttheyear.
