SisterCarrieisthefirstnovelofthefamousAmericannaturalisticnovelistTheodoreDreiser.IttellstheexperienceoftheruralgirlCarrie,whocamefromthelowersocialclass,andthewayshejumpedintoaBroadwaystar,andvividlyshowsusthepictureswhichwerefullofCarrie’sincreasingendlessdesire.
SisterCarrierhasgonethroughthehardshipsofjobhunting,diseasesandunemployment.Inordertosurviveinthebigcity,shefirstbecamethemistressofthesalesmanDrouet,andlaterelopedwiththehotelmanagerHurstwood.However,HurstwoodlosthisjobinNewYork.Forthesakeoflife,Carrierbecameachorusactor.AnaccidentalopportunityputCarriertofame,andlethersqueezeintothehighsociety.Itseemedthatsherealizedthedesire,butattheendofthestory,shestillsitsintherocking-chairdreamingofherownhappiness.Traceittoitscause,itismainlythatCarriewasdrivenfromthebeginningtotheendbythedesirethatnevermadehersatisfiedwiththestatusquo,andthatsheconstantlysearchforanothergoal.Herdesireswereprocuredbymanyfactors.
