Nothingaggravatesmemorethantalkingaboutuniversitywithpeoplewhodon'tevenknowwhytheyarethere.Itisn'tthestudentswhoannoyme,it'stheentireideathatanyonecouldgothroughhighschool,talkwithguidancecounsellors,teachers,friends,andfamily,couldapplyforgovernmentloansandsignintodebt,andstillnothaveananswerastowhyithappened.Itisn'tthestudentswhohavefailed,it'stheentiresystem.Itseemsincredibletothinkthatanyonecouldinvestyearsoftime,andtensofthousandsofdollars,withnoclearpurposetojustifyallthateffortandexpense,butithappensallthetime.

并不是说哪个学生使我恼火,而是整个这样的一个思维:
每个人都上高中,然后和老师,朋友,家人探讨,可以向政府申请贷款,但依然没有想出自己上大学的一个理由。

这很难想象一个人投资了好几年的时间,好几万美元,却没有一个清晰的目的来证明消耗这些精力和财力是值得的,但是这样的事情时刻在发生。

Somepeoplearejustinterestedincertainthingsandwanttolearnaboutthem,anduniversityseemsalikelyplacetodothat.Opinionsaboutthisparticularfunctionofuniversityaremixed.Parents,students,andevenadministratorsandfacultyaredividedonthesubject.Somethinkthisistheonlygoodreasontorunauniversity,andthatanyotherpurposeisadilutionofthisgoal.Othersthinkthisisanoutdatedideaandonethatdoesn'thavemuchplaceinmoderneducation.
