Apparentlytheaddresshehadwrittendownwashardforforeignerslikeustounderstand.Whenwegotintotheneighborhood,ourtaxidriverstartedaskingdirections.Eventually,withthehelpofapoliceman,wewereledtoahousedownawindingroad.Ourdriverwenttothedoorandinquired.HecamebacksayingAbdel'ssisterwasinthishousevisitingfriendsandwouldcomealongtoshowuswheretheylived.
Soonagirlofaboutsixteenemergedfromthehouse.Surprisingly,shedidn'tlooklikeAbdelatall.Sill,I'dseenotherfamilieswherechildrendidn'tlookalike,soIdidn'tgiveittoomuchthought.Shethenbroughtustoayard.Wewaitedintheyardwhilethesisterwentinandreturnedaccompaniedbyhermother,sistersandbrother-in-law,allofwhomgreeteduswithcautiouswarmth.Wewereshownintothelivingroom.ThemothertoldusinbrokenFrenchthatAbdelwasout,butwouldbehomesoon.Wesatonlow,cushionedseats,drinkingsweetmintteaandeatingsugarcookies,whilethefamilymemberssatwithusandmadeshy,politeconversationthatfrequentlyfellintouncomfortablesilence.
Anhourpassed,morefamilymembersemergedfrominnerrooms.Iwasagainstruckbythefactthatnoneofthemlookedathinglikeourfriend.
AfteranothertwohourshadpassedwithnosignofAbdel,thefamilyinsistedonservingusamealintheirkitchennextdoor.“Soon,”wastheonlyresponseIgotwhenIinquiredastowhattimeAbdelmightcomeback.
