Butjust33percentofundergraduatesbelievedhistorywouldleadtoafutureproofcareer,and40percentEnglish.
Howevermorethantwothirdsofstudents(67percent)thoughttheworldofworkwouldbesignificantlydifferentorcompletelyunrecognizablein20years.
Thefindings,publishedtoday,comeafterEducationSecretaryNickyMorgansparkedcontroversywithclaimsthatteenagersshouldsteerclearoftheartsandhumanitiesandoptforscienceormathssubjectsiftheywanttoaccessthewidestrangeofjobs.
Shesaidthatinpreviousdecadesstudentswouldonlytakemathsorscienceiftheywantedtopursueaspecificcareersuchasmedicineorpharmacy,butnowadaysthat“couldn't_be_further_from_the_truth”.
“Ifyouwantedtodosomethingdifferent,orevenifyoudidn'tknowwhatyouwantedtodo...thentheartsandhumanitieswerewhatyouchose.Becausetheywereuseful—weweretold—forallkindsofjobs.Ofcoursenowweknowthatcouldn'tbefurtherfromthetruth,andthatthesubjectsthatkeepyoungpeople'soptionsopenandunlockdoorstoallsortsofcareersaretheSTEM(science,technology,engineeringandmaths)subjects.”
