Ihatewarswhichmaketheworldbloody,coldandcruel,soIdonotwanttotalkaboutthewar.Butitismiraculoustoseeakiteiscutoffbyanotherone.Andthekitewhichiscutofffliesawaylikeafreebird.HassansaidtoAmirthatforyou,onethousandtimesover.Atfirst,ItoughtthefriendshipbetweenHassanandAmirwassodeep.ButthenIfoundthatHassanwasaservantinAmir’shomeandbegantorealizeitissomekindofloyalty.ThoughHassanalwayssaidthatAmirtreatedhimasafriend,deepinhismind,hedidnotputthemonthesameline.Inhiseyes,Amiristhepersonheshouldlookuptoandprotect,evendowhateverhecandotohelp.Amirwasaffluenceinmaterial,buthedidnothavefriendsbecauseofhisrace.IdislikehimbecausehealwaysranawaywhenHassanwashurtedbytheothersinordertoprotecthim.Inmyopinion,ifhestandupfoHassan,thingswouldhavebeendifferent.IcouldnotunderstandwhyAmircheatedtomakeHassanleaveatfirst,thoughtheir“friendship”iscomplicated.NowIcometoknowthatAmirmaytrytopushHassanoutofthepositionasaservant.AndhewishedthattheystandinthesamelineandHassancanchaseforthethingswantedbyhimself.ThoughAmir’sfathersaidthataboywhowon’tstandupforhimself,becomesamanwhowon’tstandforanything,AmirfinallyturnedintoabravemanwhostandedupforSohrab,thesonofHassan.

TwelveyearoldAmirisdesperatetowintheapprovalofhisfatherBaba,oneoftherichestandmostrespectedmerchantsinKabul.Hehasfailedtodosothroughacademiaorbrawn,buttheoneareawheretheyconnectistheannualkitefightingtournament.Amirisdeterminednotjusttowinthecompetitionbuttorunthelastkiteandbringithometriumphantly,toprovetohisfatherthathehasthemakingsofaman.HisloyalfriendHassanisthebestkiterunnerthatAmirhaseverseen,andhepromisestohelphim-forHassanalwayshelpsAmiroutoftrouble.ButHassanisaShi'aMuslimandthisis1970sAfghanistan.HassanistauntedandjeeredatbyAmir'sschoolfriends;heismerelyaservantlivinginashackatthebackofAmir'shouse.SowhydoesAmirfeelsuchenvytowardshisfriend?
