Wespentalldaywithoneanother.SomeofthemcouldspeakEnglish.Bythelookofthem,theirtrencheswereinasbadastateasourown.Oneoftheirmen,speakinginEnglish,remarkedthathehadworkedinEnglandforsomeyearsandthathewasfeduptotheneckwiththiswarandwouldbegladwhenitwasover.Wetoldhimhewasn'ttheonlyonewhowasfedupwithit.TheGermanofficeraskedBillifwewouldlikeacoupleofbarrelsofbeerandtheybroughtthemovertous.Billdistributedthebeeramongusandweconsumedthelot.TheofficerscametoanunderstandingthatwewouldcelebrateChristmasinpeaceuntilmidnight.
Justbeforemidnightwealldecidednottostartfiringbeforetheydid.We'dformedabondandduringthewholeofBoxingDayweneverfiredashotandtheythesame;eachsideseemedtobewaitingfortheothertosettheballrolling.OneoftheirmenshoutedacrossinEnglishandaskedhowwehadenjoyedthebeer.Werepliedthatwewereverygratefulandspentthewholedaychattingwiththem.Thateveningwewerereplacedbyothersoldiers.
