AccordingtoevidencedisclosedonMay22,2004intheGuardiannewspaper,PetertheGreat’s18thcenturyAmberRoom,whichisconsideredastheworld’smostimportantmissingarttreasure,wasdestroyedinthewar.
Sixtyyearsoflookingforithasbeenpointless.ItwasnotdestroyedorhiddenbytheGermans,ashasoftenbeenassumed.ItwaslostinafirewhileinthehandsofRedArmytroopsinacastletheycapturedinGermany.TheAmberRoomthatpeoplecanseetodayisactuallyareproduction.ManytheorieshavebeenputforwardaboutthefateoftheAmberRoomandithasbeenthesubjectofshortfilmsandbooks.Evennow,severalteamsoftreasurehunterscontinuetosearchforit.
TheAmberRoomwascompletelyreconstructedforStPetersburg’s300thanniversaryinMay2003.Theworktorecreateitlasted24years.TheRussianPostOfficealsoreleasedAmberRoomstampstocommemorateit.
