美洲土著人
最早的一批人具体是在什么时候来到我们现在所知道的加利福尼
亚地区的,谁也说不清楚。

著人就住在加利福尼亚了。
科学家们认为,这些迁居者通过一条史前

THESPANISH
Inthe18thcenturyCaliforniawasruledbySpain.Spanishsoldiersfirst
arrivedinSouthAmericaintheearly16thcentury,whentheyfought
againstthenativepeopleandtooktheirland.Twocenturieslater,the
SpanishhadsettledinmostpartsofSouthAmericaandalongthenorthwest
coastofwhatwenowcalltheUnitedStates.OfthefirstSpanishtogoto
California,themajoritywerereligiousmen,whoseministrywastoteach
theCatholicreligiontothenatives.In1821,thepeopleofMexicogained
theirindependencefromSpain.CaliforniathenbecamepartofMexico.In
1846theUnitedStatesdeclaredwaronMexico,andafterthewarwonby
theUSA,MexicohadtogiveCaliforniatotheUSA.However,thereisstill
astrongSpanishinfluenceinthestate.Thatiswhytodayover40of
CaliforniansspeakSpanishasafirstorsecondlanguage.
西班牙人
在18世纪的时候,加利福尼亚是由西班牙统治的西班牙士兵最早是
在16世纪初期来到南美洲的,他们同土著人打仗,并夺去了他们的土

GOLDMINERS
In1848,notlongaftertheAmerican-Mexicanwar,goldwasdiscoveredin
California.Thedreamofbecomingrichquicklyattractedpeoplefromall
overtheworld.Thenearest,andthereforethefirsttoarrive,wereSouth
AmericansandpeoplefromtheUnitedStates.Thenadventurersfrom
EuropeandAsiasoonfollowed.Infact,fewachievedtheirdreamof
becomingrich.Somediedorreturnedhome,butmostremainedin
Californiatomakealifeforthemselvesdespitegreathardship.Theysettled
inthenewtownsoronfarms.BythetimeCaliforniaelectedtobecomethe
thirty-firstfederalstateoftheUSAin1850,itwasalreadyamulticultural
society.
淘金矿工

Chinese-AmericansliveinallpartsofCalifornia,althoughalarge
percentagehavechosentostayinthe"

ofLosAngelesand
SanFrancisco.
OtherimmigrantssuchasItalians,mainlyfishermenbutalsowinemakers,
arrivedinCaliforniainthelate19thcentury.In1911immigrantsfrom
Denmarkestablishedatownoftheirown,whichtodaystillkeepsuptheir
Danishculture.Bythe1920sthefilmindustrywaswellestablishedin
Hollywood,California.TheindustryboomattractedEuropeansincluding
manyJewishpeople.TodayCaliforniahasthesecondlargestJewish
populationintheUnitedStates.
JapanesefarmersbeganarrivinginCaliforniaatthebeginningofthe20th
century,andsincethe1980salotmorehavesettledthere.Peoplefrom
AfricahavebeenlivinginCaliforniasincethe1800s,whentheymoved
northfromMexico.However,evenmorearrivedbetween1942and1945to
workintheshipandaircraftindustries.

Inmorning,tookferrytoAngelIslandfromtheportinSanFrancisco
Bay.OnthewayhadagoodviewoftheGoldenGateBridge.From1882
to1940AngelIslandwasafamousimmigrationstationwheremany
ChinesepeopleappliedforrighttoliveinUSA.Thecellsinthestation
wereverysmall,coldanddamp;
somedidnotevenhavelightbutthe
immigrantshadnowhereelsetogo.Theirmiserablestayseemedtobe
punishmentratherthanjusticeandfreedomtothem.Theywrotepoemson
thewallsabouttheirlonelinessandmournedtheirformerlifeinChina.In
1940thecivilauthoritiesreformedthesystemsothatmanymoreChinese
peoplewereabletograsptheopportunityofsettlingintheUSA.Made
meverythoughtfulandthankfulformylifetoday.
