s‘Tiger,Tiger’.Ateleven,whenthewaror1914-18brokeout,Iwroteapatrioticpoemwhichwasprintedinthelocalnewspaper,aswasanother,twoyearslater,onthedeathofKitchener.Fromtimetotime,whenIwasabitolder,Iwrotebadandusuallyunfinished‘naturepoems’intheGeorgianstyle.Ialsoattemptedashortstorywhichwasaghastlyfailure.Thatwasthetotalofthewould-beseriousworkthatIactuallysetdownonpaperduringallthoseyears.
However,throughoutthistimeIdidinasenseengageinliteraryactivities.Tobeginwiththerewasthemade-to-orderstuffwhichIproducedquickly,easilyandwithoutmuchpleasuretomyself.Apartfromschoolwork,Iwroteversd'
occasion,semi-comicpoemswhichIcouldturnoutatwhatnowseemstomeastonishingspeed—atfourteenIwroteawholerhymingplay,inimitationofAristophanes,inaboutaweek—andhelpedtoeditaschoolmagazines,bothprintedandinmanuscript.Thesemagazineswerethemostpitifulburlesquestuffthatyoucouldimagine,andItookfarlesstroublewiththemthanInowwouldwiththecheapestjournalism.Butsidebysidewithallthis,forfifteenyearsormore,Iwascarryingoutaliteraryexerciseofaquitedifferentkind:
thiswasthemakingupofacontinuous‘story’aboutmyself,asortofdiaryexistingonlyinthemind.Ibelievethisisacommonhabitofchildrenandadolescents.AsaverysmallchildIusedtoimaginethatIwas,say,RobinHood,andpicturemyselfastheheroofthrillingadventures,butquitesoonmy‘story’ceasedtobenarcissisticinacrudewayandbecamemoreandmoreameredescriptionofwhatIwasdoingandthethingsIsaw.Forminutesatatimethiskindofthingwouldberunningthroughmyhead:
‘Hepushedthedooropenandenteredtheroom.Ayellowbeamofsunlight,filteringthroughthemuslincurtains,slantedontothetable,whereamatch-box,half-open,laybesidetheinkpot.Withhisrighthandinhispockethemovedacrosstothewindow.Downinthestreetatortoiseshellcatwaschasingadeadleaf’,etc.etc.ThishabitcontinueduntilIwasabouttwenty-five,rightthroughmynon-literaryyears.AlthoughIhadtosearch,anddidsearch,fortherightwords,Iseemedtobemakingthisdescriptiveeffortalmostagainstmywill,underakindofcompulsionfromoutside.The‘story’must,Isuppose,havereflectedthestylesofthevariouswritersIadmiredatdifferentages,butsofarasIrememberitalwayshadthesamemeticulousdescriptivequality.
