Voynich’snovelisathrillingaccountofrevolutionaryenthusiasm，religiousdevotion，clericalbetrayalandromanticlove—thephilosopherBertrandRussellcalledit“oneofthemostexcitingnovelsIhaveread”．ItwaspublishedinNewYorkin1897，twoyearsafteritscompletion，asitsEnglishpublisherfearedanegativereaction—onereviewercriticizedthebook’s“shockingandhorriblecharacter”．AtranslationappearedthefollowingyearinRussia，wherethetsarist（沙皇）authorities’disapprovalonlyenhanceditspopularity.
