At19,withhisearningsandhisparents'support,hetravelledtoParisandRomeforfurthertrainingandartisticstudy.Beforeheleft,hedrewaportraitofhismotherinpencilandsculptedasmallbust(半身像)ofhisfatheroutofclay.Then,22-year-oldAugustusopenedanartstudioinRomeandworkedonhisfirstlife-sizedsculpture,calledHiawatha.AnartpatronwasimpressedwiththissculptureandpromisedtohelpAugustus"untilyourgeniusandlaborsshallhavemetwiththerewardtowhichIfeeltheyareentitled".
In1876,AugustuswaschosentodesignamonumenttotheCivilWarheroAdmiralDavidFarragutoftheU.S.Navy.Completedfiveyearslater,whenhewas33,hisfirstmajorsculpturefortheU.S.wasunveiledatMadisonSquareinNewYorkCity,thesculptor'sboyhoodhome.Oneartcriticcalledit"thebestmonumentofthekindthecityhastoshow".ThenthegiantStandingLincolninLincolnPark,ChicagoinasettingbyarchitectWhite,1884-1887,wasconsideredthefinestportraitstatueintheU.S.
However,in1900,aged52,hisdoctorstoldhimhehadcancer.Eventhoughhewasoftenill,hecontinuedtoworkathishomeandstudioinCornish,NewHampshire.
In1905,PresidentTheodoreRooseveltrequestedthatAugustusredesignAmericancoins—toconveythestrengthofthenation.Augustusmadelifelikepencilsketchesofhiscoindesigns.Yet,AugustusdiedinAugust1907,twomonthsbeforehisl0-dollarand20-dollargoldcoinswereissued.AugustusSaint-Gaudenshadfulfilledhisdream-andmore!
