ThetrackingofmeteorsiscarriedoutbylotsofcamerasonEarth.TheoldestoftheseistheEuropeanFireballNetwork(EFN),whichdatesbackto1951andisoperatedbytheAstronomicalInstituteoftheCzechAcademyofSciences.Now,thenetworkuses24state-of-the-artdigitalcamerasequippedwithfish-eyelenses(透镜)in18stationsacrossAustria,theCzechRepublicandSlovakia.Twomorestations,inGermany,areplannedforlaterthisyear.
Thedigitalcamerastakeback-to-backphotographs,with35secondexposures,fromdusktodawn.Fish-eyelensesallowasingleexposuretocoverthewholeskyimmediatelyaboveeachcamera.Ifmorethanonecameraseesthesamefireball—whichisusuallythecase—that,meteor’scoursecanbetriangulated(进行三角测量),withaprecisionofabouttenmetres,bycomparingtheimages.Thisyieldstwovaluablepiecesofinformation.Plottingthepathbackwardsrevealstherock’sorbitbeforeitchargedintoEarthsatmosphere.Projectingitforwardsuggestsapotentiallandingsite.

Inviewoftheproblem,thespaceagencyhasdevelopedanewtechnologyandtrieditoutinwindtunnels,andnowbelievesthatitcouldbeputtocommercialuse.Thatplanewillflyashighas55,000feet----farhigherthannormalplanes---andmakeasoundofonly60decibels.That’sfarlessthan90decibelsthrownoutbynormalplanes,andisroughlyinlinewithacaronthemotorwayorabusyrestaurant.
“Aslongaswecangetendorsementfromthegeneralpublic,theplanewillprobablybesomethingthat’sacceptable,”saidPeterCoen,projectmanagerforNASA’scommercialsupersonicresearchteam,inanewBloombergreport.“Ifwegetapproved,wewillhavethefull-sizedversionoftheplanetriedoutandtheplanewillbeputintouse.”
