Volcanoescaninfluencetheworldinwayswemightnotthinkabout.Forexample,onDec.151989,a747jetliner(alargeairplane)flewthroughathickashcloudproducedbyMountRedoubt,anAlaskanvolcanothathadn’teruptedin25years.Theashcausedallfourenginestodie,andtheplane’selectronicswentdead.
“TheplanewaswithinseveralthousandfeetofflyingintothemountainsbelowwhenthepilotsgotacoupleofenginesrestartedandlandedsafelyinAnchorage,”McGimseysays.Itcostnearly$80milliontorepairthedamagetotheplane.
