Inaninterview,KhaledHosseiniexplains,"IwassearchingforEnglishtranslationsofpoemsaboutKabul,foruseinascenewhereacharacterbemoansleavinghisbelovedcity,whenIfoundthisparticularverse.IrealizedthatIhadfoundnotonlytherightlineforthescene,butalsoanevocativetitleinthephrase'athousandsplendidsuns,'whichappearsinthenext-to-laststanza."

PartTwointroducesLaila.SheisagirlgrowingupinKabulwhoisclosefriendswithTariq,aboylivinginherneighborhood.TheyeventuallydeveloparomanticrelationshipdespitebeingawareofthesocialboundariesbetweenmenandwomeninAfghansociety.WarcomestoAfghanistan,andKabulisbombardedbyrocketattacks.Tariq'sfamilydecidestoleavethecity,andtheemotionalfarewellbetweenLailaandTariqculminateswiththemmakinglove.Laila'sfamilyalsodecidestoleaveKabul,butastheyarepackingarocketdestroysthehouse,killingherparentsandseverelyinjuringLaila.LailaissubsequentlytakeninbyRasheedandMariam.
Afterrecoveringfromherinjuries,LailadiscoversthatsheispregnantwithTariq'schild.AfterbeinginformedbyAbdulSharifthatTariqhasdied,sheagreestomarryRasheed,amaneagertohaveayoungandattractivesecondwifeinhopesofhavingasonwithher.WhenLailagivesbirthtoadaughter,Aziza,Rasheedisdispleasedandsuspicious.ThisresultsinhimbecomingabusivetowardsLaila.MariamandLailaeventuallybecomeconfidantsandbestfriends.TheyplantorunawayfromRasheedandleaveKabulbutarecaughtatthebusstation.Rasheedbeatsthemanddeprivesthemofwaterforseveraldays,almostkillingAziza.
