Abstract
ThepresentstudypresentsadetailedreportofaprojectimplementedtosolvetheproblemthatmostofmystudentsdonotlikedoingtheoralpracticeIassignthemtodoafterclass.Itishypothesizedthatlearners'interestinoralpracticeafterclasswillbegreatlyincreasedbyabetterorganizationinthisrespect.Thishypothesisisverifiedbyafour-weekpracticeofwell-organizedoralworkactivities.
Methodologically,fourmethodsareused,andtheyareanalyticmethod,causeanalysis,questionnairesurvey,andbrainstormingactivation.

Ihavebeenteachingthestudentswhoareintheirsecondyearofajuniormiddleschool.InmyteachingI’vefoundtherearesomeproblems.NowI’11finishmystudyinBeijingTVUniversity.IhopeIcansolvetheproblemsthathavetroubledmeforsometimethroughtheactionresearchsothatIcanapplymyknowledgeandtheoryintopractice,whichIlearnedfromBeijingTVUniversity.
2.SummaryofthePreliminaryResearch
ThispartofmystudywasconductedduringMays,1999-May14,1999.
2.1Problem
TheproblemIhaveinmyteachingisthatmostofmystudentsdonotlikedoingtheoralpracticeIassignthemtodoafterclass.
2.2Problemanalysis
Inmyteaching,theproblemidentifiedwasreallyaseriousproblem.Mypreliminaryresearchconfirmedthattherewerethreemainreasonsthataccountedforstudents'reluctancetodotheoralassignmentsoutofclass.
Firstly,somestudentsdidnotfeelinterestedinpractisingoralEnglishaloneafterclass.Theythoughttheycouldnotcommunicatewithoutpartners.Secondly,somestudentshadsomedifficultiesindoingoralpractice,sotheyhopedthattheycoulddoitafterclassundermoreconcretedirectionoftheteacher.Thirdly,moststudentsfeltoverloadedbecauseofaheavierhomeworkassignments.
TheProblemhadbeentroublingmeforalongtimeandnowIwasdeterminedtofindasolutiontotheproblem.Inmystudy,Iusedfourmethodsofanalysis.
2.2.1Analyticmethod
Throughcarefulanalysis,Iwasledtoaseriesofquestions:
Forinstance,Ifoundamajorityofmystudentsdonotlikedoingthisassignment,andIwantedtoknowwhyitshouldbethecase,andwhethertheythoughtitimportantandnecessarytopractiseoralEnglishornot?
Iftheythoughtitimportantandnecessary,theproblemwasactuallycausedbymyself,notbymystudents.ProbablytheoralworkIassignedmystudentstodowaspoorlyorganized.

Inthissituation,Iaskedmyselfaseriesofquestionsandtriedtoprovidesomeanswerstothem.

Imadeapilotinvestigationinthisrespecttoknowmoreaboutthesituation.Forthispurpose,Idesignedaresearchprocedurelikethefollows.Oneday,Igavethemtwooraltasks一ReciteLesson86andformgroupsvoluntarilytomakeanewdialogue.Thetitlewas"AskingAWay".Thenextday,Igotthefollowingfeedback:
Onlysevenstudentsrecitedthelesson.
Onlyonegroupofthreestudentsmadeanewdialogue.
Therestdidnotdotheoraltasks.
ThenIaskedthemtwoquestions.Onewaswhysomestudentshaddonetheoraltasks.Thestudents'responses:
First,thosewhohadmadenewdialoguesaidtheyenjoyedspeakingEnglishandtheyalsolikedtopractiseoralEnglishwithpartners.
Second,thosewhohadrecitedthelessonsaidtheyhadreciteditbecausethelessonwasverylongandthereweremanynewpatternsinthislesson.Iftheydidnotreviewthemintime,theywouldforgetsomeofthem.
Theotherquestionwaswhymoststudentshadn'tdonetheoraltasks.Thestudents'reasons:
First,mostofthemthoughtwrittenhomeworkwasmuchmoreimportantthanoraltaskswere.
Second,theythoughtahugeamountofwrittenhomeworkgivenbytheteachersofdifferentsubjectsmustbehandedinthenextday.Andalltheteacherswouldcheckitcarefully,whiletheEnglishteachermightspendalittletimecheckingtheoraltask,sotheyhadtofinishwrittenhomeworkfirstandsometimestheyhadnotimetodotheoraltasks.
Third,theyfeltitverydifficulttorecitesuchlonglessons.
Fourth,theyfelttiredofpractisingdialogueswithoutpartners,whiletheycouldnotfindpartners.
SincemostofmystuddntsdidnotdotheoralpracticeIaskedthemtodoafterclass,Idesignedaquestionnaire(SeeAppendixA)tofindoutwhyitshouldbeso.Iintendedtogetmoredetailed,moreexactopinionsfromallthestudentsthroughthequestionnaire.AndItriedtomakeitasscientificandeffectiveaspossible.AtfirstIaskedfourstudentswhowereofdifferentEnglishlevelstotryoutthequestionnaire.ThenImodifiedsomeoftheitems.AfterthatIgaveoneofmyquestionnairetomystudentsandgavethemfifteenminutestofinishit.Allofthem,thirty-sevenstudents,returnedtheirquestionnaireswhichwereleftanonymous.
Whenallthesedatacamein,Imadesomestatisticalevaluation.Theresultsshowedthatover70%ofthestudentsthoughtregularlypractisingoralEnglishafterschoolcouldimprovetheirEnglishspeakingandthatabout63%ofthemthoughtoralpracticewasverynecessaryfortheirfuture.ThereforeIthoughtthestudentswereclearabouttheimportanceandnecessityoforalpractice.Buttheymightrunupagainstdifficultiesthattheycouldnotovercome,sotheylosttheirconfidenceandinterest.
2.2.4Brainstormingactivation
WhenIwasengagedintheproblemanalysis,IconsultedmythesissupervisorMissLiuJinandoftentalkedtomyclassmatesaboutalltheproblemsImet.TheygavemealotofadviceandhelpsothatIponderedtheproblemmoredeeplyandcarefully.
Afteralengthyproblemanalysis,Ideterminedtolaunchaprojecttoovercomethisproblem.
2.3Projectobjective
Myresearchobjectiveistoenhancemystudents'interestindoingoralpracticeafterclass.
2.4Projecthypothesis
Itishypothesizedthatlearners'interestinoralpracticeafterclassisincreasedbybetterorganization.
2.5Possiblesolutions
Withthesereasonsinmind,Ihavecorrespondinglyprovidedsomepossiblesolutionswhichareasfollows.
2.5.1Helpmystudentstomakeupninegroups.
2.5.2Givethemsomeprimingmaterials,necessarybackgroundinformationandusefullinguisticforms.Ialsoprovidetopicsthatareclosetoreal-lifeandcloselyrelatetomypurposeofpractisingspokenEnglishtoexpandtheirview.
2.5.3Givethemchancestoactouttheirowndialoguesorplaysbeforetheclass.

3.Full-ScaledImplementationoftheSolutions
ThispartofmystudywasconductedduringMay16,1999-Jun15,1999.
3.1Makeupgroups
Inordertoguaranteethatmostofthestudentswouldbehighlyinvolvedintotheoralpractices,Idecidedtomakeupgroups.Throughtheinvestigations,Ifoundthereweretwomainproblemsforthemtodooralpracticebythemselvesathome.OnewasthefamilvmembersofmoststudentsdidnotknoworhardlyknewEnglish.Whenthestudentsmetdifficultiesorhadproblems,theycouldn'tgetanyhelp.Andiftheymademistakesinoralpractice,theycouldn'tbecorrectedintime.Theotherwastheythoughttherewaslittlepleasuretopracticewithoutapartner.Throughanalysis,IthoughtIwouldliketogivespeakingthepurposeofcommunication,soitwasthemosteffecti
