Ingeneral,thestudentswithahighertendencytogetangryalsooverestimatedtheircognitive(认知)abilities,thestudyfound.Ontheotherhand,thestudentswhoweremoreneurotic(神经质的),aqualitythat’softenassociatedwithanger,generallyunderestimatedtheirintelligence.Neuroticismreferstonegativequalitiesincludingunreasonableanxietyandstrongupset.
Perhapsnotsurprisingly,theresearchersfoundthatnarcissism(自恋)wasakeyfactorinhowpeoplejudgedhowsmarttheywere.Themoreill-temperedpersonalitieswereassociatedwith“narcissisticillusions,”Zajenkowskisaid.
It’simportanttonotethatwhilethestudyfoundthatangrypeopletendtobemorenarcissisticandoverestimatetheirintelligence,angerwasunrelatedtoactualintelligencelevel.And,althoughtheresearchersfoundanassociationbetweenthetwoqualities,it’sunclearifthere’sacauseandeffectrelationshipbetweenangerandoverestimatingintelligence.Moreresearchisneededtoexplorethatlink.Andthestudydidn’ttesthowangeraffectsperceivedintelligenceintheheatofthemoment.Thestudyassessedangerasapersonalityquality,butangerisoftenatemporaryemotion.Additionalresearchisneededtofindoutifpeoplewhodon’tangereasilymightbeoverlyconfidentintheirabilitiesonlyinthemomentwhenthey’reupset.
