TheincreaseinSUVsin2020ledtoariseinoilconsumptionthatcancelledouttheeffectofelectriccars,saysPetropoulos.Muchthesameistrueoverthepastdecade.Between2010and2020,globalCO2emissionsfromconventionalcarsfellbynearly350megatonnes,duetofactorssuchasfuelefficiencyimprovementsaswellastheswitchtoelectriccars.EmissionsfromSUVsrosebymorethan500megatonnes.
“WhilethegrowthinEVsisencouraging,theincreaseinSUVsisheart-breaking,”saysGlenPetersattheCICEROclimateresearchcentreinNorway.
